Mechanics require a number of different policies to ensure that they are covered for all aspects of their business.

You may not know that things like cover for customer vehicles, driving extensions and faulty workmanship are not always automatically included in mechanic insurance policies.

What insurance do mechanics need?

Public liability insurance will usually be the first policy needed for mobile mechanics, auto-electricians, motor mechanics and any other mechanical repair occupations.

Your policy for mechanics should include cover for customers vehicles, especially while being driven by you.

Another extension that we usually have included on a mechanics liability insurance is faulty workmanship. This is where it can get tricky when comparing insurance for mechanics as these are not standard conditions and are often excluded in return for a cheaper premium.

Mechanic business insurance is cover for your workshop or commercial premises. This policy will generally cover you for stock, the fit-out of your workshop, lifts and hoists.

Generally speaking, business insurance is usually only taken out by mechanics that work from a physical location. If you are a mobile mechanic then we can put cover in place to cover things like your tools Australia-wide.

When taking out mechanic insurance a lot of mechanics forget to consider a professional indemnity policy as they don’t think it’s required for their business.

While most mechanics don’t need professional indemnity insurance, some mechanics do. The mechanics that require a professional indemnity insurance are ones that are doing roadworthy certifications, pre-purchase inspections and any other inspections or certifications.

Some mechanics liability insurance will offer a PI extension however, a stand alone policy will provide you significantly more cover.

Although cover for customer’s vehicles is usually an extension to a mechanics liability insurance it is extremely important to have this included. Not all policies have customer vehicles included and this can cause a significant loss to your business if something went wrong.

There are 2 options available when insuring customers vehicles. Full comprehensive cover and your legal liability for customers vehicles.

Your legal liability will only usually cover damages to a customers vehicle that you are liable for. For example, moving one customers vehicles and damaging another. Your liability only cover wouldn’t cover things like storm and hail damage. Storm and hail damage would be covered under the comprehensive cover.
